Saturday Art Studio

Young artists ages 4-6 will have to opportunity to explore a variety of mediums, materials, and artistic themes every Saturday morning! Students will be able to use their imagination to build and create tons of great art, ranging from traditional to exciting modern projects while learning appropriate visual art terminology and vocabulary. Great for kids who enjoy hands-on, beautifully messy creating!

Time Machine

Kids ages 8-12 can discover new mediums and art techniques each Saturday afternoon by learning about a new artist and art movement each class! Learn appropriate visual arts terminology and vocabulary while creating lots of art from different materials. Students will gain an understanding of the elements and principles of design and expand their knowledge of art history and influential artists.

Sketching with Mercedes

Young artists will be introduced to different drawing techniques and styles while learning how to use pencils, drawing tools, and paper correctly and expanding their vocabulary and skill set. This is a great program for kids who love to draw and are looking for more guidance and knowledge to grow their talent. Creative thinking is always welcome!

Illustration Studio

High school students are welcome to come to the Glenhyrst Cottage Sunday afternoons to expand their drawing skills and learn new techniques and tricks to creating highly realistic drawings. Their creativity will be encouraged and fuelled with different projects and drawing styles. Students are welcome to bring their own projects and drawings from school or home to work on and receive feedback. Students will also learn and practice positively critiquing fellow artist’s work as well as their own at the end of each class. Assistance with portfolio preparation for post secondary education will also be addressed.

Let's Talk About Art

A new monthly program for anyone interested in art and art appreciation! Everyone is welcome to attend these free sessions. Every 4th Wednesday of the month, like-minded individuals get together and engage in meaningful conversation in a safe space. This program includes monthly topics, guest speakers and artful conversations aimed to inspire the artist within and explore possibilities.

Discover Drawing

This winter, students ages 12-17  have the opportunity to work with arts professional, Mercedes Victoria. Students will be introduced to contemporary and traditional drawing practices, exploring popular artists and art fundamentals through hands-on studio experience. Tour current exhibitions, and build your portfolio. Students are required to bring appropriate clothing, a snack and imagination!

Children's Intro to Drawing

Young artists will learn the basics of drawing with graphite pencil. They will be introduced to and experiment with different drawing and shading techniques, learn how to set up a proper composition, and complete a final sketch. Students are asked to bring a few photos or small items to class if they want to sketch something in particular.

The Next Step in Drawing for Adults

Students with a background in drawing will be able to expand their skills and knowledge. A quick review of basic tools and techniques will be given. Learn tips and tricks of creating a realistic drawing. A final drawing should be completed by the end of class. Students are encouraged to bring a photograph or object to work from. A short critique of works with fellow students will done at the end of the class. 


Kit: students are welcome to bring their own materials (list below), or purchase a kit for $25 Kit list: set of graphite pencils (2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B), white eraser, kneaded eraser, sketchbook, blending stump
