black and white chalk pastel drawing by Mercedes Victoria of woman mennonite settler pioneer

Chalk pastel 2016

I can't say that I found this woman...she found me. Something in her expression told me there was more to her story than what I could initally see. While drawing a person, I start a conversation with their image and learn a bit about them as they emerge from the paper. Even after completing this drawing however, she still remains a mystery to me and she continues to hold onto her secrets tightly.

"Thoughts" received an Honourable Mention at Central Ontario Art Association's annual juried exhibit 'Crossections' in Etobicoke in 2016.
